Inside the package are the 2A charger (which charges the smartphone in about 3-4 hours), the USB-MicroUSB cable, a transparent bumper case and earphones.

Hardware & Connectivity

The technical features of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 are good: inside turns a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 CPU with Adreno 512, supported by as many as 6 GB of RAM memory (variant dedicated to our country) and 64 GB of internal memory expandable via MicroSD up at 2TB (and in addition there are 100 GB free on Google Drive for 1 year).

The display, interrupted at the top by the notch that contains front camera, front flash, sensors and capsule, is a 6.3-inch IPS panel covered by a glass in Gorilla Glass 6 while on the back there is the fingerprint sensor, sufficiently fast and precise, the dual 12 + 5 megapixel camera and the LED flash.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0, Dual-Sim support with two dedicated slots, as well as the one for memory expansion, and the dual-times that allows both SIM to take advantage of the 4G. The Wi-Fi mono band does not turn up the nose, it does not support the 5 GHz frequency, the USB port is Micro and not Type-C and the speaker sound is mono.
The battery is 5000 mAh while the sensors it is equipped with are: accelerometer, digital compass, proximity, brightness and gyroscope.

Ergonomics, Design & Materials

One of the merits of this Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 is to be a battery-phone but to be a normal smartphone in everyday use. Asus has indeed succeeded (in line with the previous model) to create a smartphone with excellent autonomy but still well balanced in terms of weight (175 grams) and dimensions (157.9 x 75.5 x 8.5 mm). It is not particularly different than many other smartphones on the market, and its display / size ratio is around 90%. In daily use it is not difficult to manage it with one hand or in any case no more difficult than other products of the same size of the screen.

It is available in two colors: blue and gray, both with special lighting effects that change according to the inclination, which makes it definitely modern and attractive.

Display, Audio & Multimedia

The display measures 6.3 inches, has a resolution of FHD + (2280 x 1080) and is of the IPS LCD type. It is protected by a glass with Gorilla Glass 6 certification and reaches a maximum brightness of 450 nits.

Overall it is a enjoyable display with bright colors and blacks deep enough, but above interrupted by a medium size notch. It does not disturb excessively during use except with some full-screen applications where the image is cut off.

From the audio point of view it is equipped with a single speaker on the lower part of a good workmanship. The 3.5mm audio port is present instead.

Camera

The photographic sector is as follows:

  • 12 megapixel main sensor (IMX 486) f / 1.8, 27mm;
  • secondary 5 megapixel sensor for depth of field;
  • 13 megapixel front f / 2.0 sensor supported by front LED flash.
  • On paper and in practice the yield is good, always considering the market segment that goes to cover.

Overall: very good macro, good views, decent night photos. In general, some details are kneaded and it is difficult to manage the strong contrasts, a “limited” situation by activating the HDR mode, although not perfect. There are smartphones that make better pictures but you can not say that the photos are a problem for this Zenfone, in short, it is his.

Also good selfie in almost all light conditions thanks to the front flash, even here the speech is the same, not the top but not a negative point.

Battery & Autonomy

The 5000 mAh of this Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 are more than enough to cover a day of use but it is difficult to get to close the two full days. This is partly due to the processor, the Snapdragon 660, which is particularly energy-intensive (we had already seen it with other smartphones). For this reason we did not expect anything different, in this case a Snapdragon 710 could have made a difference but probably would have also made the price rise.

It is said that, once the official firmware is released to Android Pie, the situation can not be improved further with a greater optimization of the software.

Overall an autonomy undertone for the potential of the battery but still good if we consider that in any situation is able to arrive late in the evening.

Software

At the software level there is not much to say and maybe it’s good. Asus has decided not to introduce its own graphic customization leaving Android naked and raw, excellent choice in our opinion to reduce the risk of slowdowns.
Out of the box is updated to Android Oreo however, by the end of January, will be released via OTA (over the air) Android 9 Pie. We have tested it with a Beta of this last update where we found few and trivial problems of youth that the company has assured to resolve in the final release.

At the level of features added by Asus there is little: in addition to the camera application, completely revised. There is only the ZenMotion setting that allows you to activate / deactivate the double tap on the screen to wake up the device.

The other settings are classic such as the ability to adjust the tone of the display (warmer or colder). Turn on or off the dark theme with effect in the drop-down notification and the energy saving mode with the possibility to activate it automatically reached a certain level .

A clean, simple and responsive software, perfect for the typical user of this smartphone.
